Starting from the picturesque village of Valldemossa, 30 minutes drive from Soller, we head up through the Cairats valley, following a four wheel drive track before entering the estate of Son Moragues.
The land was owned by the Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvador during the late 19th century.
Part of the grounds were purchased by the Spanish government in 1979 and is now open to all to enjoy the magnificient views from the ridgeline and get a glimpse of a bygone era of charcoal burning, the production of quicklime in lime kilns and snow gathering.
After an hour of slow climbing we reach the picnic area at the Refugio des Cairats and take a timely rest.
From here we deviate from the main path and follow a forest track that weaves up the side of the mountain, finally reaching the top of Puig Es Teix at 1064m.
The vista from the pinnacle is incredible, taking in the peaks of the Puig Mayor and Puig Massenalla to the north and Puig Galatzo to the south.
From the top we continue down to the Archduke's path and follow the ridgeline before descending through the neighbouring valley back to Valldemossa.
